The department  of  Neurosurgery  for  children  at  Lotus   Hospital for Women & Children  deals  with  surgical  problems  in  newborns, infants, children  and  adolescents  with  nervous  system  diseases  requiring  surgical  intervention.  The  diseases  requiring  such  advanced  surgery  vary  from  age  group  to  age  group. In  newborns  and infants,  most  of  the  diseases  pertain  to  birth  defects  of  the  brain,  infections  causing  complications  such  as  blockage  of  passages within  the brain’s  fluid circulation  system,  and  bleeding  into  the  brain  or  surrounding  tissues. In  young  children, diseases  such  as  infections,  bleeding  due  to  falls, injuries, accidents  predominate.

In older  children  and  adolescents, most  instances  of  neurosurgical  disorders pertain  to  trauma :  falls,  accidents  leading  to  swelling  of  the  brain  substance,  bleeding  or  blood  clots  within  the  cranial  vault  and  infections.  Rarely,  tumours  of  the  nervous  system  require  surgical  intervention.  A  subset  of  children  with  severe  epilepsy  or  fits  not  responding  to  medications  and  amenable  to  surgery  may  benefit  from  highly  specialised  epilepsy  surgery  to  disconnect  triggering  areas  of  the  brain  from  the  rest  of  the  brain  substance.

The  surgical procedures  are  complex,  need  careful  planning  and  intervention  as  needed.  Sometimes, even  in  situations  of  a  blood  clot  or  bleeding  into  the  brain  substance,  a  wait  and  watch policy  with  medical  treatment  as  the first  choice  may  the  best  way.  Decisions are  made  on a  case  to  case  basis  and  by  our  experts  in  children’s  intensive  care,  children’s  neurologists  and  the  neurosurgeons  as needed.

Services  Offered  :

  • Surgery for  bypassing  obstructions  in  the  brain’s  ventricular  system  due  to  birth  defects  and  infections :  ventriculoperitoneal,  ventriculoatrial  shunts,  external  ventricular
